Civilisation is DYING for Oasis Cities (1)

Oasis-Cities – CAR-FREE, CARBON-FREE, CRIME-FREE, and CARE-FREE

As a consumerist civilisation with vast and ever-growing demands on Earth’s resources, the greatest challenge we face is….

How can we GREATLY REDUCE our CONSUMPTION & WASTE whilst GREATLY INCREASING quality of life, health, safety, community cohesion, and overall contentment..?

Oasis Cities are the SOLUTION to this seemingly impossible dilemma..!

Oasis Cities – a CIVILISATIONAL GAME-CHANGER..!

If city dwellers were to live in smaller and smarter spaces they would consume much less ENERGY, much less LAND, and waste much less of everything – especially WATER, FOOD, and TIME..!  But that’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the multifarious mega-advantages of Oasis Cities..!

Think of all the incredible technology we use in our daily lives – like the computer I am writing this on.  With a few brief clicks I can access the most obscure pieces of information that would have taken hours, days, or even weeks of hunting in one of the worlds best-stocked libraries.  Or I can download my musings to the internet, where it gets immediately exposed to a world-wide audience, at least potentially.

Compared with computers and the internet, and all the other remarkable innovations that we have so quickly taken for granted, what could possibly be cruder, more wasteful and complicated, more stressful, more antiquated – and finally more UNIMAGINATIVE – than Cities composed of COUNTLESS BUILDINGS of many shapes, sizes, build quality, and purpose..?  All scattered untidily, haphazardly, and environmentally destructively, over a vast and undefined area..?

Our concept of cities – unsightly, wasteful and stressful sprawls of countless separate buildings – is more outmoded, more inefficient, and definitely more hard work, than even a  washing mangle..!   Such a glaring contradiction, yet everyone seems to accept it as an unchangeable reality and don’t ever stop to think about what a glaring aberration it is..!

MARS ON MUSK’S MIND

If Mars were habitable and Elon Musk had the means to send thousands of colonists there, would he instruct them to build an Earth-like city there..?  Of course not – such an outmoded design template would be insane..!

Terra-forming of Mars

Any habitable world is likely to have evolved dangerous pathogens, carnivorous creatures, perhaps even warlike humanoids – that would pose a constant deadly threat to the colonists. In the unlikely event that none of those threats existed, space colonists would build an enclosed 3D city in order to conserve resources and for protection against the elements.

2D cities are ridiculously WASTEFUL and make no logical sense, especially when starting with a clean slate..!

So, if 3D cities are the logical human habitat on other planets, then why not here on Earth..?  Surely the same needs – conserving resources, protection from the elements, and other potential threats – apply equally on Earth..?  I would say EVEN MORE SO given the environmental, demographic, and political crises that are looming here.

Happily, unlike the staggering cost and cutting-edge technology that would be needed to get a handful of people to Mars, building Oasis Cities on Earth does not involve any Rocket Science..!  We have had the technology to build such cities for many decades already and, when all factors – like provision of utilities, a secure food supply, and maintenance – are taken into consideration, they would probably be more economical to build and upkeep than conventional 2D sprawl cities.  And certainly MUCH SAFER..!

Enclosed habitats would make life better and easier in a multitude of ways.  Everything that makes life comfortable – public utilities and facilities, goods supply chains, technological infrastructure, waste management, etc., would be greatly simplified and would operate at much greater efficiency.  Oasis City inhabitants would also be far more secure from external threats whether human, biological, or whatever nature can throw at us – bad weather, flood, fire, earthquakes, etc.  And there are a multitude of other excellent reasons for having Oasis Cities – ecology, esthetics, energy, economy, self-sufficiency, health and well-being, social, political, and so on.
