Most E. European countries have steeply declining populations but only a few more dramatically so than Bulgaria, the EU’s poorest country. Unlike W. Europe – with its high wages and generous welfare payments – Bulgaria is not attractive to the hordes of 3rd world economic migrants which have kept populations (and ethnic tensions) increasing in W. Europe.
Bulgaria has a lot more going for it than other E. European countries as a potential emigration destination for W.Europeans. Although winters can be chilly summers are very warm. Bulgaria has mountains, skiing, sandy beaches, good agricultural potential, very cheap property, good (Turkish-influenced) food, inexpensive restaurants, cheap beer and very good red wine.
Perhaps in the future Bulgaria could attract migrants from W. Europe fed up with high housing prices, traffic congestion, political polarisation, enforced “diversity”, and rapidly worsening crime..?
However, not everyone fancies the idea of living amongst poor people who don’t speak English, and one where there are few (if any) well-established British (or other W. European) communities. And, unlike in Spain for example, few shops, pubs, or restaurants which specifically cater to them.
So what better way to entice migrants than Oasis-Cities, where they could feel much more at home, whilst injecting their skills and boosting the local economies?
