The SEA-STEADING Institute aims to build “start-up countries” at sea, known as “seasteads”, that will offer greater freedom for innovation in science, technology and politics. In 2011 Peter Thiel was reported as having given a total of $1.25 million to Seasteading.org – whose mission is “to establish permanent, autonomous ocean communities to enable experimentation and innovation with diverse social, political, and legal systems”. In a 2017 interview with The New York Times, Thiel said seasteads are “not quite feasible from an engineering perspective” and “still very far in the future”.
This image makes absolutely no sense Judging by its protective wall of concrete caissons, it looks like a coastal marina rather than a “floating city”. If it is in international waters they must be very shallow waters. Since virtually all such waters are claimed by existing states, how could such an entity possibly be “independent”?
