Outline proposal

The premise of Deltapolis.org is

  1. 2-D cities – OBeCities – are composed of 100’s of thousands of buildings of all shapes and sizes
  2. with 2-D cities it is too easy to keep adding bits and extending the city limits
  3. in effect they “go to seed” and morph in an endless ugly sprawl
  4. Sprawl is ugly, unhealthy, inefficient, wasteful, and the cause of many social and health problems
  5. 2-D cities are also inconsistent with an advanced technological civilisation
  6. 3-D cities, on the other hand, would be finite
  7. However, a massive single structure “City within a Building” is both impractical and undesirable
  8. I propose new cities comprised of “mini-arcologies”, each one a community in its own right housing about 8,000 people

I prefer not to call Deltapolis an Arcology because it conjures up the image of

I am proposing a small city comprised of pyramidal “mini-arcologies” of approx 10 hectares (25 acres) floor plan, each with an estimated population of 7,500 people living in smallish but very space-creative apartments (approx 60 m2 per couple, and 20m2 for each additional person) – each would have a private patio with fantastic panoramic views, both exterior-facing and atrium-facing.  If a 1sq km (100 hectare) site contained 4 such edifices (40 hectares), then 60% of the land would be left-over for recreational purposes with gardens, water features, many trees., etc. The density (30,000 per km2) may be considered high but because there would be no cars (or any motorised vehicles) – it would be a very tranquil place indeed.   I often compare my idea with that of a luxury cruise-liner where the effective density is up to 300,000 per km2.
